Icelandic musician Snævar Njáll Albertsson is the mastermind behind Dad Rocks!, the solo project of the singer who initially rose to prominence with the Danish band Mimas. Dad Rocks!, however, is quite different: the guitar here is mostly acoustic and is accompanied by piano, trumpet, violin, viola, handclaps and much more. As Dad Rocks!, Albertsson is inspired by acts such as Bill Callahan, Owen, Why?, Akron/Family and Do Make Say Think. This has led to a sound that is a unique mix of folk, pop and lo-fi with complex guitar-work and anthem-like arrangements.

Snævar Njáll Albertsson’s primary sources of inspiration, however, are the relations closest to him. Most of all his little daughter who also inspired the name Dad Rocks!, naturally a pun on the ’dad rock’ genre. The use of pathos and irony is something that is explored throughout his work. Lyrically, this is also a central aspect with subjects both big and small. Sometimes delivered almost cynically but with words that are close to naïvism. Underneath this, the irony lurks at every corner, and even the title of the debut EP, “Digital Age”, explores this dynamic.

Whilst the EP was recorded in a lo-fi setting on an analogue tape recorder, Albertsson had another vision for the forthcoming debut full-length, Mount Modern, and went for a different aesthetic that allowed the instruments to stand out clearer to bring out every single melody carried out on the many instruments played on the album. For this task he enlisted Icelandic super producer Addi 800 (Blur, Björk) to mix the album and Tom Mcfall (REM, Stars, Regina Spektor, Bloc Party) to do the mastering.

You Can Be A Wesley (YCBW) is Saara Untracht-Oakner, Winston Macdonald, Nick Curran and Dylan Ramsey.

Formed in the basement of a Boston University dorm room, YCBW made their first recordings on a broken laptop with a free mixing program. After recording their first demo in early 2008 and touring throughout New England and the Northeast, YCBW gathered an immediate fan base.

In 2008 the band took a brief hiatus when Saara and Nick finished their last semester of college in Sydney, Australia and Winston embarked on an adventure through Ecuador. Upon their return, the band regrouped to record the LP “Heard Like Us,” which they released in late 2009.

YCBW recently recorded and released a 7″ including the singles “Talking Science” and “Old In Florida.” They currently live in a big house together and are working on a full length due out in 2011.

The New Pornographers

THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS

Location: Vancouver, BC

Genre: Indie/Indie-Rock

The New Pornographers “Moves (Radio Edit)” by Frontside

The band’s first four albums each ranked in the top 40 on The Village Voices Pazz & Jop year-end poll of hundreds of music reviewers. From 2000 to 2006, either a New Pornographers’ album or a solo album from one of the band’s members ranked in the top 40 on the list each year.[1] In 2007, Blender magazine ranked The New Pornographers’ first album, Mass Romantic, the 24th best indie album of all time. It is the second-highest Canadian album on the list, behind Arcade Fire‘s Funeral (which came in sixth).[2] In 2009, Rolling Stone magazine ranked the band’s second studio album, Electric Version, #79 in the “100 Best Albums of the Decade”.[3]

The name of the band was chosen by Carl Newman, who has said that he came up with it after watching a Japanese film called The Pornographers.[4] Many writers have assumed that the name was a reference to Jimmy Swaggart‘s reputed claim that rock and roll was “the new pornography.”[5] The band has released five albums to date: Mass Romantic (2000), Electric Version (2003), Twin Cinema (2005), Challengers (2007), and Together (2010). A live album recorded on their 2006 tour is available only at concerts and on the band’s website.

All of the band’s original members were prominent within the Vancouver music scene prior to forming The New Pornographers. Kathryn Calder, who is also Newman’s niece, joined the band in 2005 largely as a live replacement for Case, whose solo career often left her unavailable to perform with the band. Calder’s first lead vocals for the band were on 2007’s Challengers, singing the lead on “Failsafe” and sharing the lead with Newman on “Adventures in Solitude”.[6]

In 2009, The New Pornographers contributed a cover of the song “Hey, Snow White” to the AIDS benefit album, Dark Was the Night, produced by the Red Hot Organization.

The band released their fifth album—Together—on May 4, 2010, on Matador Records. The album includes collaborations from St. Vincent, Beirut‘s Zach Condon, and Okkervil River‘s Will Sheff.[7]

The Soft White Sixties

THE SOFT WHITE SIXTIES

Location: San Francisco, CA
Genre: Rock, Soul

Live in the Evening by The Soft White Sixties

San Francisco’s The Soft White Sixties are a hard-driving, original rock & roll band that delivers R&B grooves and pop hooks with the transformative power of raw soul.

Formed in 2008 by Mexican-American singer-songwriter Octavio Genera, The ‘Sixties were founded with powerhouse rhythm section Joey Bustos (drums) and Ryan Noble (bass/vocals) — both former members of internationally touring band Link 80 — joined in 2009 by former radio personality Aaron Eisenberg (guitar/keys), and in 2010 by midwestern-born singer-songwriter Joshua Cook (guitar/vocals).

These five comrades-in-harmony have generated a devoted following through sold-out shows in The Bay Area’s best-known 200-350 capacity venues (Cafe du Nord, Bottom of the Hill, The Rickshaw Stop, The Red Devil Lounge, The Uptown) and rapidly expanded their reach in 2010 with featured slots in SF’s IndieFest and Summerfest music festivals, prime-time television appearances and sold-out performances on Sacramento’s indie circuit, and a successful whirlwind West Coast Tour from Seattle to Los Angeles. With no more than a burned CD of demos, the group has also garnered airplay on SF’s flagship rock station Live 105, who named The ‘Sixties as one of the top ten bands in the Bay Area.
Queen of the Press Club by The Soft White Sixties

2011 has been a busy year for The ‘Sixties as they kicked off with two sold out performances, headlining The Great American Music Hall and opening The Noisepop Festival at The Independent. Immediately following were three showcases in Austin coinciding with the SxSW Festival. The group released their debut EP at another sold-out show in San Francisco before appearing in June at The Harmony Festival with The Flaming Lips, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Primus, Grace Potter, and Spearhead; and in July at the High Sierra Music Festival with My Morning Jacket, Dr. Dog, Delta Spirit, Dawes, and others. In between a summer West Coast tour The ‘Sixties filmed a video for the EP and laid down three new tracks, all slated for release in the fall. October-December the group hits the road again for a West Coast-Rocky Mountain tour.
