COLE DEGENOVA

Location: Chicago, IL

Genre: Neo Soul, Alternative

The other day we received this message down the wire.

Chicago neo-soul singer Cole DeGenova has just released his sophomore album Another Country, which streams at http://coledegenova.bandcamp.com/

We always give a listen to music that’s sent to us. And often times we listen only to a song or two. Maybe three. This time we kept listening to Cole DeGenova’s album “Another Country” over and over again. What initially starts as a poppy neo-soul slowly develops into very creative and rich fusion that also adds blues, funk and jazz (especially in Blues No More and Decolonized Minds).

Musician, poet, and songwriter Cole DeGenova has spent most of his life crafting his eclectic artistic voice. Born in Chicago and growing up in a family of musicians and artists, DeGenova began playing piano at age four and spent his childhood studying classical piano, the jazz and blues of his hometown, and the pop music of The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, and D’Angelo. By age 15 he was playing professionally in jazz and blues clubs on Chicago’s South Side. His prodigious talents led him to study at Berklee College of Music in 2005 where he trained further with jazz piano great Danilo Perez. After forming his funky alternative soul group Cole DeGenova & The Peoples Republic with fellow Berklee students, they released their first album JUST PEOPLE AGAIN in 2009. Three years later, and after thousands of miles of road covered, his second album, ANOTHER COUNTRY,  is here this summer 2012; an inspired culmination of lessons learned on the road, soulful melodies, and the infectious grooves of his band. A troubadour in the truest sense, Cole DeGenova has performed alongside or opened for the likes of Saul Williams, Kurt Elling, Patricia Barber, Maurice Brown, Snarky Puppy, The Alabama Shakes, Meshell N’degeocello, Paula Cole, J Davey, and rapper the GZA.

The Wandering Bears
Dec 18th, 2011 by hachaduryan

THE WANDERING BEARS

Location: Iowa City, Iowa

Genre: Indie, Indie – Rock

The Wandering Bears project began in 2009 when singer/guitarist Mannix!, pianist David Earl [Caroline Smith and The Goodnight Sleeps], and bassist Mitch F began collaboration on a collection of musical scraps and pieces. They were joined by singer Samantha Blickhan, singer/guitarist Drew F, and drummer Paul K [The Diplomats of Solid Sound] to complete a project heavily based on collaboration.

Through the course of self-releasing a DIY album, a few East Coast tours and a jaunt through the West, The Wandering Bears have developed a healthy regional enthusiasm towards their recorded music and happiness-infused, musically-intricate live-show.

Recently, The Wandering Bears project, in collaboration with Plastic Horse Records, recently created and released the album “Michael Cougar May..” named for the famed nudist-revolutionist. The ten-track album is full of electro-folk, pop rock and roll songs. The Little Village wrote “Michael Cougar May…captures the positive energy and snarky outlook of Iowa City’s The Wandering Bears, and is a must-have album for lovers of indie-pop and local music.” [Gavin, Tim. Little Village, 21 Sept. 2011. Web. 18 April 2009.] The release was recorded and produced by project member and practicing wizard, David Earl.

While singer Samantha Blickhan currently works away on a Masters of Musicology Degree at Oxford University in England, the Bears have begun work on a covers project, recreating and recording modern R&B/Soul/Rock compositions.

Dad Rocks!

DAD ROCKS!

Location: Denmark (Iceland)

Genre: Indie-Folk-Rock

Dad Rocks! – Weapons (featuring Charles Spearin of Broken Social Scene) courtesy of Paper Garden Records

Icelandic musician Snævar Njáll Albertsson is the mastermind behind Dad Rocks!, the solo project of the singer who initially rose to prominence with the Danish band Mimas. Dad Rocks!, however, is quite different: the guitar here is mostly acoustic and is accompanied by piano, trumpet, violin, viola, handclaps and much more. As Dad Rocks!, Albertsson is inspired by acts such as Bill Callahan, Owen, Why?, Akron/Family and Do Make Say Think. This has led to a sound that is a unique mix of folk, pop and lo-fi with complex guitar-work and anthem-like arrangements.

Snævar Njáll Albertsson’s primary sources of inspiration, however, are the relations closest to him. Most of all his little daughter who also inspired the name Dad Rocks!, naturally a pun on the ’dad rock’ genre. The use of pathos and irony is something that is explored throughout his work. Lyrically, this is also a central aspect with subjects both big and small. Sometimes delivered almost cynically but with words that are close to naïvism. Underneath this, the irony lurks at every corner, and even the title of the debut EP, “Digital Age”, explores this dynamic.

Whilst the EP was recorded in a lo-fi setting on an analogue tape recorder, Albertsson had another vision for the forthcoming debut full-length, Mount Modern, and went for a different aesthetic that allowed the instruments to stand out clearer to bring out every single melody carried out on the many instruments played on the album. For this task he enlisted Icelandic super producer Addi 800 (Blur, Björk) to mix the album and Tom Mcfall (REM, Stars, Regina Spektor, Bloc Party) to do the mastering.

Telekinesis
Nov 17th, 2011 by hachaduryan

TELEKINESIS

Genre: INDIE-POP/INDIE-ROCK

Location: Seattle, WA

Telekinesis – Please Ask for Help courtesy ofMergeRecords

Telekinesis is Michael Benjamin Lerner, an er based out of Seattle, Washington,United States who is currently signed to Merge Records.

Lerner signed to Merge Records in early 2009, and shortly afterward released the eponymously named debut album Telekinesis! on April 7, 2009. Recorded in September of 2008, the album was produced, mixed, and engineered with the help of Chris Walla (guitarist for Death Cab for Cutie), recording one song per day on analog tape.

While on tour, Lerner is joined by Chris Staples (electric gtr), David Broecker (electric / acoustic / bass gtr), and Jonie Broecker (bass gtr / keyboards) to make up the touring band.

Official website: http://www.telekinesismusic.com

Here is what Merge Records say about Telekinesis:

The dread of the sophomore album is a common affliction among new artists, and in early 2009, Michael Benjamin Lerner was no exception. Excitement about the success of Telekinesis! left Michael feeling edgy and restless when it came time to write new songs. The long-distance relationship that inspired his debut album’s songs of wanderlust had ended, a mystery ailment had rendered him physically off-balance and (thankfully, only temporarily) deaf in one ear, his touring van had been severely damaged in an accident, and he had just returned from a much-needed “escape” to Berlin in the dead of winter where he had banished himself to a room in the warehouse district to write songs from 9 to 5 each day. Always attempting to capture a specific moment or feeling with his songwriting, Michael spent no more than a day on each song. However, he was still a couple of songs short of an album that he could be happy with.

Michael describes his method of songwriting as “heart on my sleeve,” so trying to write more “super-pop” songs just wasn’t working while his life was such a mess. He took a few months off, let his balance return, fixed his van, and went on tour, returning energized and ready to head back into the studio.

Continuing their partnership from Telekinesis!, Michael and producer Chris Walla again recorded to analog tape. They tossed out all the rules-as they are wont to do when they get together-and, as Michael says, “went a little crazy,” spontaneously dancing and recording drum parts backwards. Walla shared his love of Mark Robinson’s Flin Flon project (specifically, the 1998 Teenbeat album A-OK), and Michael became enthralled with the fuzzed-out bass sounds. For the first time, he used his new bass guitar to write songs, and Michael’s characteristic Telekinesis pop hooks combined with his darker lyrics, giving the music a decidedly rocking direction.

“50 Ways,” which Michael describes as “the most complicated song I’ve ever written,” uses a reference to Paul Simon’s tongue-in-cheek breakup song “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” to express the anger and frustration of leaving someone but still seeing them everywhere you go. “Please Ask for Help” was inspired by listening to The Cure’s Disintegration on repeat. Michael used what he calls “that dirty bass line” to evoke the “weird lust” he imagines swirling around in a seedy bar on a Saturday night.

The result of all of this is 12 Desperate Straight Lines, twelve new songs of heartache, anger, and even a little hopefulness. With lyrics like “I cannot love you” and “I never loved you,” it’s not hard to guess that this is a breakup album, but Michael’s indomitable optimism shines through in the infectiousness of the music and in the final words of the final track, “Gotta Get It Right Now”: “And it’s alright, if it means nothing / Cuz it meant something, anyway.”

The new Telekinesis band features Jason Narducy (Robert Pollard band, Bob Mould band) on bass and Cody Votolato (Jaguar Love, The Blood Brothers) on guitar.

Ghosting – Freelance Whales by thewildhoneypie

Freelance Whales came together in 2008, after connecting through Craigslist and friends-of-friends. The band’s debut album, Weathervanes was largely composed by frontman Judah Dadone, the lyrics based on a combination of childhood memories and dream journaling. The band’s name derives from Dadone’s childhood in Jerusalem, and a near-drowning incident in the Sea of Galilee.

The band began to gain traction in October 2009 as they honed their sound on subway platforms around New York City. Toward the latter part of 2009, they self-released Weathervanes, and on April 27, 2010 the album was re-released under the band’s record labels, Frenchkiss and Mom + Pop.

The New Pornographers
Oct 14th, 2011 by hachaduryan

THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS

Location: Vancouver, BC

Genre: Indie/Indie-Rock

The New Pornographers “Moves (Radio Edit)” by Frontside

The band’s first four albums each ranked in the top 40 on The Village Voices Pazz & Jop year-end poll of hundreds of music reviewers. From 2000 to 2006, either a New Pornographers’ album or a solo album from one of the band’s members ranked in the top 40 on the list each year.[1] In 2007, Blender magazine ranked The New Pornographers’ first album, Mass Romantic, the 24th best indie album of all time. It is the second-highest Canadian album on the list, behind Arcade Fire‘s Funeral (which came in sixth).[2] In 2009, Rolling Stone magazine ranked the band’s second studio album, Electric Version, #79 in the “100 Best Albums of the Decade”.[3]

The name of the band was chosen by Carl Newman, who has said that he came up with it after watching a Japanese film called The Pornographers.[4] Many writers have assumed that the name was a reference to Jimmy Swaggart‘s reputed claim that rock and roll was “the new pornography.”[5] The band has released five albums to date: Mass Romantic (2000), Electric Version (2003), Twin Cinema (2005), Challengers (2007), and Together (2010). A live album recorded on their 2006 tour is available only at concerts and on the band’s website.

All of the band’s original members were prominent within the Vancouver music scene prior to forming The New Pornographers. Kathryn Calder, who is also Newman’s niece, joined the band in 2005 largely as a live replacement for Case, whose solo career often left her unavailable to perform with the band. Calder’s first lead vocals for the band were on 2007’s Challengers, singing the lead on “Failsafe” and sharing the lead with Newman on “Adventures in Solitude”.[6]

In 2009, The New Pornographers contributed a cover of the song “Hey, Snow White” to the AIDS benefit album, Dark Was the Night, produced by the Red Hot Organization.

The band released their fifth album—Together—on May 4, 2010, on Matador Records. The album includes collaborations from St. Vincent, Beirut‘s Zach Condon, and Okkervil River‘s Will Sheff.[7]

NEW VILLAGER

Location: San Francisco Bay Area, New York

Genre: Electro-Pop

NewVillager – Lighthouse courtesy of Artrocker Magazine

NewVillager (pronounced, like: “Terwilliger”), is a Clinton Hill, NY, USA trio, comprising: Ben Bromley, Ross Simonini and Collin Palmer. They débuted with the single “Rich Doors” (Jan 2009, Two Syllable) and their latest / début album is “NewVillager” (Jun 2011, IAmSound).

“… musical project of Ben Bromley and Ross Simonini, two multi-instrumentalists who remain friends. Goalball is a game designed for the blind, kind of like handball. A lot of good bands came out of the goalball scene back in ‘83, ‘85—the Sweetie Motions, the Sans Larrys—and NewVillager listened to all of them, mostly in Ross’s car, a Karmann Ghia he bought from Ben’s mom, against the wishes of Ben’s dad. They formed the band to carry that torch forward, and started out playing low-level Goalball tournaments, rigged games in bad neighborhoods, but Goalball is supposed to be played in total silence, because the ball has bells on it. They should have known; it was a tough time for the two of them, tougher than most. The thing is, they listened, they soaked it up, the sound of that ball and its bells, and then they went into the woods and wrote a record. Everything matters, is the point, even when you’re in the woods and your name implies isolated tribesmen and latter-day gay archetypes. It’s like George Steiner says: ‘Explorers’ postulates about totally isolated tribes, about corners of tropical forest or mountain innocent of any contact with the outside are largely spurious. Good shivery stuff for the glossy magazines. How word sped across the barbed lines of mutually incomprehensible tongues, how iron utensils from the distant fringe stations came to be found in the inmost of the Mato Grosso, was something of a riddle. But the facts were certain. News could tear like invisible fire through thicket and across cataracts. You had only to listen and it came humming back.’” – Philadelphia Herald-Times

FOREIGN ORANGE

Location: Louisville,  KY/Portland, OR

Genre: Indie

Foreign Orange – I Can’t See A Face courtesy of Foreign Orange

Foreign Orange is the Electro-Beach-Wave solo project by multi-instrumentalist/songwriter Neil Dez of Louisville,  KY via Portland OR. A meglomaniac who spends his time jacking beats on his MPC sampler, and melting ears with his Gibson SG.

Neil Dez moved to Portland in 2007 and hooked up with resident producer Jeremy Sherrer, incorporating soulful pop songs, 90s guitar hooks, a melodic croon, to sherrers arsenal of heavy dance beats and hip hop production, giving the record a modern yet timeless quality. After three years in the making, ‘Ghost Vibrations’ carry songs that bring on lives of their own. With arrangements in the classic pop sense, each song hits with its own iconic status.Incoporating all relevant styles of the last several years, whether it be girl-group, baroque 60s pop, evil beach, club-bangers, disco/house, drug-fueled ambience, and even chill wave, ‘Ghost Vibrations’ has something for everyone. This simply is the new pop.

This debut full length is expected for release early 2012 on Wall To Wall Records, and the band will embark on a west-coast tour to support.
